How likely is moss to take over your roof?
A quick rule of thumb built from what we see on Portland roofs: pick the shade, tree cover, material and age, and the checker shows the risk and a sensible care schedule.
Portland roofs grow moss fastest where shade, tree cover and an aging surface meet, usually on north slopes under Douglas firs. Use the checker for a quick read, then call (503) 917-5484 if the reading is high or you see lifted shingle edges.
What the four answers tell us
Direction comes first because sun is what dries a roof. North slopes stay damp longest in the wet months, east slopes get weak morning light, and south slopes dry fastest. Tree cover adds shade and drops needles and leaves that hold water in the valleys and gutters.
Material matters because moss needs something to grip. Cedar shake and older asphalt shingles with worn granules give it a rough, porous surface, while metal sheds water and offers little to hold. Flat membranes collect debris where water sits. Age ties it together: the older the surface, the faster moss returns after a cleaning.

Moss questions we hear on Portland roofs
Why does the side of the roof facing north matter so much for moss in Portland?
In a Portland winter the sun stays low in the southern sky, so a north slope can go weeks without direct light. It dries last after every rain, and moss needs exactly that: steady damp and shade. South slopes bake in summer and tend to crack or curl instead of growing moss.
Does a high reading on the moss risk checker mean my roof is already damaged?
No. The checker estimates how fast moss is likely to come back, based on shade, trees, material and age. Damage depends on how long moss has been rooted. Lifted shingle edges, granules in the gutters or a damp patch in the attic are the signs it has gone past cosmetic.
Can zinc strips replace regular moss removal on a shaded Portland roof?
Zinc strips slow regrowth on the slopes below them once the roof is clean, but they work best near the ridge and lose effect farther down long slopes. Under heavy firs they help stretch the time between cleanings rather than replacing them. They do nothing for moss that is already rooted.
