A roof in Portland works harder than most
A Portland roof fails mostly from water that never gets a chance to dry: moss and needles hold it, flashing lets it in, and worn shingles stop shedding it. MY Construction Roofing repairs leaks, replaces worn roofs, removes moss and installs gutters across Portland and the metro. Call (503) 917-5484, any hour.
Rain is not unusual here. What wears a roof down is how long it stays wet. From October into May, a north slope under a Douglas fir can go weeks without fully drying, and that is where moss takes hold, granules wash off and shingle edges start to curl. Add the east wind that pushes out of the Columbia River Gorge into Gresham and Troutdale, and the odd ice storm like the one in January 2024, and you get the mix of slow wear and sudden damage that keeps us busy.
Our job is to sort out which one you are dealing with. Sometimes the answer is a forty minute fix: a cracked pipe boot, a lifted ridge cap, a gap in the step flashing beside a dormer. Sometimes the shingles have simply run out of life and patching them is money spent twice. We tell you which, show you photos from the roof, and put the price in writing before any work starts.
We work on the houses Portland actually has: Craftsman bungalows and Old Portland foursquares on the inner east side, postwar ranches out east, split levels and 1990s subdivisions in Washington County, steep lots in the West Hills, and plenty of low-slope roofs on porches, additions, plexes and older commercial buildings along the main streets.

How likely is moss to take over your roof?
Four questions, no sign-up. The answer is a rule of thumb from what we see on Portland roofs, not a diagnosis. For a real answer we look at the roof.
Six signs your roof needs a roofer before winter
Granules in the gutters
A handful of gritty granules in every downspout means the shingles are shedding their protective layer and aging fast.
Moss lifting shingle edges
When moss pushes up the bottom edge of a tab, water runs sideways under it and into the nail line below.
Brown rings on a ceiling
A stain that grows after storms is an active leak. The source is often a few feet uphill from the ring.
Creased or missing tabs
East wind lifts tabs and folds them back. A creased tab has lost its seal and will tear off in the next blow.
Rust or gaps at the chimney
Old step flashing and dried sealant around brick chimneys cause more Portland leaks than the shingles themselves.
A sagging line along the ridge
A dip in the roofline usually means wet, softened decking or rafters that need attention before the next heavy rain.
What happens after you call
You call, we ask the right questions
Where is the water showing, how old is the roof, what is it made of. That tells us whether tonight needs a tarp or a daytime visit works.
A roofer walks the roof
We get on the roof, into the attic when we can, and take photos of what we find so you see it too.
Repair or replace, in writing
You get a written estimate with the scope, materials and price. If a repair will do, we say so.
The work, done in weather windows
We schedule around the forecast and never open more roof than we can dry in the same day.
Cleanup and a final walk
Magnet sweep for nails, gutters cleared, debris hauled away, and a last check of every flashing detail.

What Portland weather actually does to a roof
Portland gets most of its rain between October and May, usually as long, light, steady rain rather than short downpours. That pattern is hard on roofs because the surface rarely dries between storms. Shaded slopes stay wet, moss and lichen move in, and fir needles pile up in valleys and behind chimneys where they hold water against the flashing.
The other side is wind. East wind out of the Gorge hits Troutdale, Gresham and the east side hardest, and it is the reason we see so many lifted and creased tabs after a cold snap. Ice storms are less common but heavy, and the January 2024 storm brought down limbs across the metro. Summers are dry and warm enough to bake older shingles, so a roof can crack on the south slope while it grows moss on the north.

Roofing questions Portland homeowners ask us
How fast can a Portland roofer get to a leaking roof at night?
We answer the phone 24/7, so the first step happens right away: we ask where the water is showing up and what the roof is made of. If a roofer is free, we head out to stop the water that night with a tarp or a temporary patch, and the permanent repair follows once the roof is dry enough to work on.
Do you work on both shingle roofs and flat roofs in Portland?
Yes. Most of our days are spent on asphalt shingle roofs, but we also install and repair standing seam metal, cedar shake, synthetic slate, concrete tile and low-slope systems like TPO, torch-down and EPDM on porches, additions, apartments and commercial buildings.
Is moss on my Portland roof really a problem or just cosmetic?
Thin moss starts out cosmetic. Once it roots into the gaps between shingles or shakes, it holds water against the roof, lifts tabs and feeds granule loss, which shortens the roof. We remove it by hand and brush, never with a pressure washer, then treat the roof or add zinc to slow the next round.
What does a roof replacement cost for a typical Portland house?
Most architectural asphalt reroofs on a typical Portland home land somewhere around $14,600 to $31,800 in 2026. Steep pitches, two layers to tear off, rotted decking and metal or shake materials move the number up. You get a written estimate after we look at the roof in person.
Which parts of the Portland area does MY Construction Roofing cover?
We work across Portland's east side, west side and north neighborhoods, plus Gresham, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Oregon City, Vancouver and Camas, and out to Newberg and McMinnville near our Sheridan head office. Call with your address and we will confirm.
When is the best time of year to replace a roof in Portland?
The driest stretch, roughly late June through September, is the easiest window for a full replacement. We also reroof in the wet months by opening only as much roof as we can dry in each day and watching the radar closely, so a winter leak does not have to wait for summer.
